Copenhagen named the world's most bike-friendly city

11.08.2015  10:47

After coming behind Amsterdam the past two times, the Danish capital has claimed the title of the best cycling city in the world, according to influential urban consulting firm Copenhagenize that released a top 20 bike city ranking earlier this summer.

While many people of Copenhagen might take it for granted that it’s possible to bike through the city undisturbed by other road users, such smooth riding requires long-term city-planning, infrastructural investments and so-called smart city solutions implemented by the city.

The Copenhagenize Index praised the Danish capital for being “impressively consistent in its investment in cycling as transport and in making efforts to push it to the next level”. And it is exactly this kind of planning to make a city more bike-friendly that will be an important part in the Copenhagen Solutions exhibition running from August 19th-September 8th in Seoul City Hall lobby (see more information here)

And the effort has brought results: the index points to the city’s remarkable increase in the percentage of cyclists, from 36% of their travels in 2012 to 45% in 2014. The consulting firm, which advises cities worldwide on bicycle-friendly urban design, said to the news site TheLocal.dk that such a steep increase “has never happened anywhere”
