Having been in the top group of the Global Peace Index (GPI) ranking since the index was first published in 2007, Demark once again holds the title of having a 'very high' state of peace.

On a general level, the 2017 GPI finds that the world slightly improved in peace since last year, although it has become less peaceful over the last decade. 93 countries improved while 68 deteriorated. Topping the list were Iceland, New Zealand, and Portugal, respectively.

GPI is a product of the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), and the index is comprised of 23 indicators of violence and fear of violence in three categories: ongoing domestic and international conflict, societal safety and security, and degree of militarisation.
