Denmark promotes bilateral cooperation at the World Climate Industry Expo
Denmark participated in the World Climate Industry EXPO (WCE 2023) that took place in BEXCO, Busan, last week with various events and a Danish pavilion.
On the opening day, May 25, the Korean Prime Minister Duck-soo Han received a tour by the Ambassador of the pavilion displaying Denmark’s green solutions. The pavilion was co-organised by the embassy, the Confederation of Danish Industry, and the Danish Chamber of Commerce, featuring Danish energy-related companies such as Bech-Bruun, CIP, COP, COWI, DNV, LAUTEC, Maersk Supply Service, Ørsted, Plesner, and Vestas, alongside organisations such as the Export and Investment Fund of Denmark.
On the same day, the embassy and the Korea Wind Energy Industry Association co-hosted the Korea-Denmark Green Business Forum. The event aimed to strengthen the bilateral cooperation to contribute to the Korean government's goal of expanding the offshore wind power generation capacity to 14.3 GW and the market size of clean hydrogen to 30 trillion Korean won by 2030.
Forum participants included the Danish Energy Agency, which sets and implements the national energy policy; Energinet, the state-owned transmission system operator, as well as most organisations represented by the forum. From Korea, participating organisations included the 2050 Carbon Neutrality and Green Growth Commission, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, Jeju National University, Kim & Chang, LS Cable & System, Shilla Corporation, and SK ecoplant. The event was attended at high level by Danish Ambassador Svend Olling; Co-Chair Sang-hyup Kim of the Presidential Commission on Carbon Neutrality and Green Growth; Director-General for Energy Policy Office Won-ju Lee at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy; CEO Kyung-il Park of SK ecoplant and Chairperson of the Korean Wind Energy Industry Association; Director Tilde Hellsten of the Danish Energy Agency; Vice President Klaus Winther of Energinet; and Professor Hee-jip Kim of Seoul National University.
The Korea-Denmark Green Business Forum kicked off with a submarine cable supply contract signing ceremony between the Danish multinational renewable energy company Ørsted and Korea’s LS Cable & System.
At the event, Ambassador Svend Olling emphasized that "Korea and Denmark are important partners in securing clean energy and developing the related industrial ecosystems. This event confirms that the partnership between two countries is becoming stronger, and we look forward to further cooperation in the future.”
On May 26, the embassy’s Innovation Centre Denmark (ICDK) hosted a seminar on “Cities & Partnerships Green Transition” in collaboration with COWI and SK ecoplant. The seminar was held to encourage partnerships between Korean and Danish cities by sharing examples of climate solutions and the use of green energy. The cities of Ansan, Pyeongtaek, and Samcheok demonstrated the cases of hydrogen pilot cities implemented by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, while SK ecoplant explained their strategies for developing a net-zero city. From Denmark, Green Lab Skive introduced the green industry park being developed in the city Skive, and COWI presented global case studies and future collaborations on hydrogen energy between Denmark and Korea.
